Prepping for Your Exterior Paint Project
Exterior painting can be just as exciting as painting inside your home, but making sure that your space or surface is prepped can make a big difference. There are a few different things you can do that can help make your exterior painting project easier.
One of the most important things you can do is to properly clean the surface that you are going to be painting. If there is dirt, dust or debris on the surface you want to paint, this is going to interfere with the paint. It can cause the paint to not stick, or it can cause bubbling. Additionally, it can cause the paint to lift and make the whole project less than perfect.
Scrape Loose or Chipping Paint
Another issue you might run into is the surface paint being chipped or there being pieces that are raised up. These pieces will end up chipping off as the paint dries, which will leave unsightly spots. The paint chips can also leave bubbled spaces in your paint and can make the surface uneven and make your new paint chip as well.
Another issue that can ruin your paint job is damage to the surface that you are painting. Gouges, rough spots, uneven patches and other damaged surfaces can cause paint to adhere unevenly or chip and crack. Repairs before painting allow you the chance to ready the surface and get it looking great, then cover your repair with paint so that you cannot even tell you worked on it.
Re-Caulk and Seal
Re-caulking is going to help provide a clean and smooth surface for your paint by sealing any damaged areas to prevent water from getting in. This type of repair makes it easy to paint right over so that you cannot even see where the caulk was applied for a smooth and beautiful surface.
Set Up Drop Cloths and Tape Surfaces
There is nothing more annoying than having to scrape paint off of a window or take paint off of something that should not have been painted. A great way to avoid this hassle is to take the time to cover everything outside that does not need to get paint on it. Cover furniture, tape off windows, cover gutters and move cars away from the painting area. Taking the time to move things that might be difficult to clean if they get paint on them is going to help make your clean-up so much easier.
